SEO and Keywords go hand-in-hand. Choosing the right keyword helps you to rank high in search engines. Having a good website that is relevant for the keywords your buyer personas are searching for is important. So then what is Keyword research?
WHAT IS KEYWORD RESEARCH?
Keyword is the core of SEO. It involves identifying popular words and phrases people enter into search engines like Google, usually sort after in terms of ranking.
The first step is to compile a list of keywords that your potential customers can use to easily locate your brand. Once you’ve got a list, you can use tools like the Hubspot Keyword tool, or even the Google Adwords keyword tool to better define keywords for you.[irp]
When looking or searching for an appropriate keyword to use, here are 3 points to consider:
- Relevance: How relevant is the keyword to your potential customers. Can the keyword help your customers to find you easily? The Keywords have to be relevant because they determine how well your brand gets publicised to an extent, For instance, if you keep putting the wrong keywords for your business, people may not get to know about your business. Which is not good for business growth. Also, if you’re a location-based business, it would be best to add your location. This allows you to be relevant especially for local people.
- Search Volume: Search volume is all about how your keywords yield results. You want to know how much search volume can be created from your keyword. The higher the search volume created, the better it is to be used in relevance to your brand.
- Difficulty: Difficulty is one of the things we prefer to shy-away or run from. If the difficulty or competition for the keyword is high, it doesn’t mean that it can’t be ranked for. In such cases, it’s better to use “Long-tail phrases”, rather than words. Long tail keywords are specific detailed search queries. They tend to have lower competition and higher conversion rates.
Creating a keyword that is in accordance to this 3listed points above, would give you a great chance of high ranking in search engines.[irp]
TIPS ON HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT KEYWORDS
- What will be the Content of your Next Article: What would be the content of the entirety of your content? It’s best to consider what your content would be or come up with one before choosing a keyword. This reduces work for you. How? It does, in the sense that you don’t need to create a content because you’ve already come up with a keyword. Consider questions like, what would you’re readers be looking for in relation to your content, and you’ll come up with a fantastic keyword.
- What Keyword(s) Would Best Suit your Content: Upon arriving at a content for your next article, you need to consider what keywords best suits your customers and your content. There are keywords tools to use for this purposes. Such tools include Google Keyword Planner, KWFinder, Moz’s Keyword Explorer, Keyword Tool etc.
- Use of Phrases and Long-tail Keywords: Just as we’ve stated earlier, Long tail keywords are specific, detailed search entries. Especially if your business in one of the competitive ones, phrases and long tail keywords helps rather than using words. For example, you have a food restaurant and a blog. Most people are passionate about good foods, making it highly competitive. Instead of using keywords like “food”, using phrases like “delicious ways to use bacon for nice meals”. The latter is more specific and the competition is reduced to a great extent.
- Include Keyword(s) in your Headline and Article: In order for your article to rank on page one in search results, let your keyword(s) be included in the headline and in the article itself. What better way to promote your article and create website traffic, than including your keywords which increases your rank in search engines. But note that the keyword should flow naturally with the content.[irp]
